Субкультура геймеров зародилась недавно. С появление компьютерных игр, а позже и Интернета молодежь стала активно общаться в сети. Компьютерные сетевые игры для них — это возможность общаться в действии: вместе с другими, зачастую иностранными, сверстниками проходить задания и побеждать врагов.
В словаре компьютерного сленга слово «геймер» — от английского «gamer» — означает «игрок», человек, постоянно играющий в компьютерные игры.
Это ярые сторонники компьютерных игр. В жизни они совершенно разные. У них разные работы, хобби, характеры. Объединяет их одно ,запустив любимую игру, они меняются: превращаются в Десантников, действующих на вражеских планетах, Магов и Волшебников. За свою любимую игру они будут спорить до хрипоты, переубедить их практически невозможно. Они учатся думать мыслями их персонажей, учатся жить в мире игры! Все они движимы игрой. Данная субкультура характеризуется наличием специфического языка. Сленг геймеров, как и другие виды молодежного жаргона, вобрал в себя части других сленговых систем, например программистов, общемолодежный сленг, термины разных наук, слова из иностранных языков и т.д
